Brunch . . . maybe the most quintessential meal of the week. It’s special and only usually happens once a week. The meal moves a little slower, the conversation lingers and the food is GOOD. Many people travel outside of the confines of Mequon for brunch, yet there is a great spot right in our city that’s fantastic . . . Cafe 1505.
The 1505 Experience
Cafe 1505 starts with some of the finest local ingredients. The eggs are organic and farm-fresh, straight from the hens at Old Plank Farm in Plymouth or Yuppie Hill Farm in Burlington. Add in local cheeses, homemade breads, pastries, made-from-scratch soups, fluffy pancakes and the result is a menu locals rave about. Try any of these crowd pleasers and see if you disagree:
- Portabella Frittata — roasted portabella mushroom, asparagus and tomatoes combined with fontina cheese, american fries and, of course, eggs.
- Cranberry Pecan Pancake — a buttermilk pancake packed with cranberries and toasted pecans with a dollop of homemade orange vanilla whipped cream.
- Heart Healthy Granola — the perfect combination of rolled oats, roasted salted sunflower seeds, coconut, almonds, molasses, honey and cinnamon.
Cafe 1505 also serves an exceptional lunch-fare. Salads are carefully prepared with the freshest ingredients and served with homemade dressings and a freshly baked hard roll. The quiches are so airy-light the egg custard literally melts in your mouth. And one of the newest favorites on the menu is the Roasted Sweet Potato Quesadilla — smashed roasted sweet potatoes, caramelized onions and roasted garlic stuffed inside a spinach tortilla with smoked gouda and diced red bell peppers.
Sadly, diners can feast for only breakfast, brunch and lunch but Cafe 1505 is open for carryout until just before dinner.
A Bit of History
Cafe 1505 first opened in 1991 under the name La Boulangerie. In 1999, the name officially changed to Café 1505 and in 2007 Bill Ledger purchased the establishment. He handed over the culinary lead to Chef Ken Kohls who has been instrumental in adding new menu items with a local flavor: “One of the goals at the Cafe is to create the 100 Mile Menu. This menu contains ingredients sourced from local suppliers and growers. With these locally sourced items we then create daily and weekly specials.”
In the past 5 years, Cafe 1505 has been profiled in several major publications. Accolades include: “Best Breakfast” in Milwaukee Magazine, “Best Brunch” in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a feature on the Cold Creamy Cucumber Soup in Gourmet Magazine.
Giving Back Through Cafe Cares
Cafe Cares is a fundraising initiative the owners and staff founded in 2008 to “give all that we can, with as much excitement and vigor as possible, to as many important causes, because we can. Because we should.”
Over the years, Bill Ledger and his team have donated money and services to a countless number of local organizations, including: Adoption Resources of Wisconsin, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Children’s Hospital, Family Sharing of Ozaukee County, Girls on the Run, Go Red For Women, Starting Point of Ozaukee County, Service Club of Milwaukee, Step Up To The Plate and the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse. The cafe has also supported numerous Mequon schools‘ fundraisers with both gift card donations and services.
