Concordia’s 2013 Shoreline Duathlon

August 14, 2013 By Jen Keller Leave a Comment

The bluff at Concordia University in Mequon WisconsinIf you are looking for a way to wrap up your summer workout, this could be the event for you!

This Saturday, August 17th, Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon will hold their annual Shoreline Duathlon. Proceeds from the race will benefit the CUW Cross Country and Track & Field teams, as well as Racers Against Childhood Cancer.

For those not-in-the-know, a duathlon is a triathlon — but without the swim part. It’s a run-bike-run combination race, so, if you don’t enjoy getting wet, it’s the perfect race.

The Course

For Saturday’s race, participants will start off with a 2.5 mile run, then transition to a 22 mile bike ride and finish up with another 2.5 mile run.

The first 2.5 mile run is flat and relatively fast as participants wind through the Concordia University campus and part of the cross country course.

The bike loop starts at the CUW parking lot, takes the cyclists north on Lake Shore Road up to Port Washington then back south via County C, finishing back at the start. There are some rolling hills and in many places, beautiful views of sparkling Lake Michigan.

The second run is another 2.5 miles. This one runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline and includes the infamous Concordia University Bluff. Runners get the chance to to run down and then up the steep incline. Challenging? Yes — but incredibly rewarding and definitely unforgettable.

Race Details

The CUW’s Shoreline Duathlon has grown in popularity every year. Feedback from past participants has been tremendously positive with huge kudos to top notch organization, fantastic amenities and scenic, well-thought out race courses. No doubt, this year’s race will be as well received.

There’s still time to register, either online or in-person on race day. Here are the details:

Age groups are: 12-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+

And, awards will be given to the following:

  • Overall winners
  • Overall masters age 40+,
  • Top 5 in each age group
  • Top 3 in each relay category (relays are made up of one runner for both runs and one cyclist. Relay categories are male, female, and coed).

Fees for individual competitors:

  • Before race day $55.00
  • Race day $60.00

Fees for relay teams:

  • Before race day $70.00
  • Race day $85.00

Wilson’s Lego Pizza Men Take St. Louis

May 28, 2013 By Jen Keller Leave a Comment

Lego pizza men from Wilson Elementary School in Mequon, WIWilson Elementary School students were recently featured on Channel 4 TODAY’S TMJ4. The following is a transcription of TODAY’S TMJ4 Video.

Six kids from Mequon got to meet a big star on Friday, all because of their amazing ability to build with Legos. Carole Meekins has their story.

They call themselves the Lego Pizza Men. A group of Wilson Elementary School students who love to build.

“You just click a button and it will go circling then you click it again and it would stop.”

Basically they build functional machines out of Legos. The team beat out thousands of other schools to go on to the Junior First Lego League World Festival Expo, going on this weekend in St. Louis.

“I’m just really excited today.”

“I am really, super excited.”

We’ve been following the six aspiring engineers at the big event. Photos and video of them dressing up like pizza and showing off their work.

“He built the cars . . . he built the ferris wheel.”

And just look at who they got to meet? will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

The kids are showing off their work to thousands and meeting others who share their love for science and technology.

“We hope that as they go on they want to join a First Lego League Team and then go on to the high school and then work in the high school on the robotics team in the high school.”

They hope to go on and create for national competitions but you have to start small and build from there. And just in case they didn’t already realize their huge success, they got a big high five from one of their favorite celebrities.

Preparing Homestead Students to Move On

April 29, 2013 By Jen Keller Leave a Comment

Young man wearing grey T-shirt talking to a young womanThe number of students who start college but don’t finish is “staggering and astounding” says Brett Bowers, principal of Homestead High School.

Last month, Principal Bowers gave a presentation to the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce where he outlined some of the recent changes at Homestead aimed specifically at “getting students ready for college or careers”. His ultimate goal:  to make sure that Homestead graduates are ready and prepared to move on.

In summary, Bowers mentioned the following 4 recent changes:

  • Expansion of the AP class offerings from 14 classes in 2011-12 to 17 in 2012-13, with plans to add an additional three classes by 2014. Bowers cited studies that show that students who take AP classes are more likely to succeed in college and earn a degree.
  • Creation of dual credit-credit programs where Homestead’s teachers partner with colleges and offer classes that result in both high school credit as well as college credit. Homestead originally started dual-credit classes with Project Lead the Way, a student-favorite pre-engineering program, and is now expanding it to other curriculum areas.
  • Implementation of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination Program) aimed at students in the academic middle. The program teaches study / learning strategies and supports average students taking rigorous classes to better prepare them for a college environment.
  • Implementation of flex time. As part of the transition to Homestead’s trimester class schedule, students get a 26-minute period at the end of the school day twice a week. Students in good academic standing can use this time to meet with teachers or staff — similar to office hours held by college professors.
