Dive-In Movie Nights at Mequon Pool

July 25, 2013 By Jen Keller Leave a Comment

Movie posters of The Lorax and Surf's Up side-by-side overlaid on a movie curtainBack by popular demand! Last year’s inaugural Dive-In Movie Nights were such a hit that the City of Mequon has decided to keep the tradition alive.

Mark those calendars because here’s the schedule for the upcoming Dive-In Movie Nights at the Mequon Community Pool.

Thursday, August 1st – Dr. Seuss The Lorax

Thursday, August 15th – Surf’s Up

Details

  • Movies will begin around dusk (8:30 p.m.-ish) and end around 10:00 p.m.
  • Snacks are available from the Dive Snack Shack. Or, you can bring in your own snacks and beverages, but please no glass or alcohol.
  • All children under the age of 8 must have chaperones.
  • You can swim in the pool while the movie is playing, but most people lounge near the sides.
  • For safety reasons no flotation devices are allowed.
  • If a movie is rained out, there will be attempts to reschedule — subject to availability of the equipment and lifeguards — so there are no guarantees.
  • Cost for the movie is the same as daily admission costs, or free if you already have a 2013 pool pass.

Mequon residents: Adult = $4.50 & Child = $3.50
Thiensville residents: Adult = $5.00 & Child = $3.75
Non-residents: Adult = $6.00 & Child = $4.50

Too old for the pool movies? You can always hire a sitter to do pool duty and head out to the Marcus North Shore Theatres.

The Best Way to Cool Off This Summer: The Mequon Pool

July 18, 2013 By Brian Mohsenian Leave a Comment

Mequon pool with lifeguard on tower watching swimmersGrab your swimsuit and goggles. The Mequon Community Pool is open and in full swing for the summer!

It’s not as fancy as the newly renovated River Club Pool. Nor does it have the water spouts and slippery slides like the pool in Cedarburg. But, what our Mequon Community Pool does have is convenience, low cost and social cache. It is THE place to meet your school friends and reconnect during those hot and humid summer days.

Not One but Two Pools

The Mequon Pool is actually two pools. The large main pool includes a shallow and deep end, two diving boards the kids can’t seem to stay off of, and a swimmer’s lane for those who want a healthy cardio workout.

In a separate enclosure, just feet away from the main pool, there’s a zero-depth kidd pool that accommodates parents and their toddler swimmers.

Top-Notch Lifeguards

With a kind and personal staff, the Mequon Community pool does a great job providing a safe and carefree environment. There are usually four trained lifeguards on duty at a time, with one dedicated to working the kiddy pool. Rules are strictly enforced. No running, no flotation devices and no leaping from the diving boards until the swimmer in front of you has cleared the area.

On hot summer days, the pool is flooded with kids. But don’t worry . . . there’s always Adult Swim. During certain times of the day, lifeguards will clear the pool of anyone under 18 and adults can cool off for a bit without having to worry about the little ones.

The Dive for Snacks

After taking a dip, stop by The Dive, a mobile snack bar just outside the pool entrance. They offer tasty grub and icy drinks, but most people come for the 24 flavors of ice cream. In a dish or on a cone, nothing beats a cold creamy frozen dessert after a hot day at the pool. Choose your favorite treat (mine’s an ice cold root beer float) and relax at the picnic tables just outside the pool.

Reasonable Prices

The prices for the pool are really quite reasonable. For Mequon residents ages 3-12 it’s $3.50 daily, and for ages 13 and above, it’s $4.50. Thiensville residents pay a bit more. Anyone under the age of 3 is free.

The real money saver for Mequon families is the $100 Family Pass which covers all family members to age 18. Thiensville families pay $135.

The hot and humid days of the season are here for a while, so stay cool and enjoy all that the Mequon Community Pool has to offer! Open seven days a week, 12:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from June to late August, when most of the college-aged lifeguards head back to school.

Indoor Playland With All the Bells and Whistles

May 31, 2013 By Elizabeth Braatz Leave a Comment

Boy and girl playing at table in play centerIt is often a parent’s worst nightmare . . . it’s 3 p.m. on a snowy day in mid-February and your child hasn’t taken take their regular nap. Everyone’s a little stir-crazy. What are you going to do?

There have been many days like this for local Mequon moms and fortunately there’s a little secret in our community that is great for just such situations – the Logemann Community Family Playcenter.

Located just inside the Logemann Community Center on Mequon Road (across from Piggly Wiggly), this play area is a child’s dream-come-true. There’s something for every child’s interest. For the dramatic, there’s a mini kitchen, dress up clothing, tap shoes, baby dolls and toy strollers. For the builders, there’s Lego, wooden blocks, marble tracks and a train table. Plus, there’s a safe tot area for the pre-walkers.

For parents, there is plush seating and wifi. So while your children play, you can relax, read a magazine or check your email. For working parents, it is a great place to get things done while your children are entertained and contained.

History

The Logemann Community Family Playcenter was once home to Pride and Joy Preschool run by Joni Monfre. Unfortunately, Monfre was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and had to formally close her operation. At that point, the Logemann Community Center Board of Advisors opened up the playcenter to the public. Monfre is now cancer-free and has returned to serve as the activities director. She’s an integral part of the playcenter, overseeing its day-to-day operations including birthday parties and private events.

Bonus Features

Outside of play time, the Logemann Community Family Playcenter is home to a weekly story time with Miss Joyce and Mooshie (formerly of Next Chapter Bookstore), art classes, music time and gatherings by local nonprofits, such as the MOMS Club of Mequon. Monfre also opens up the large, main room of the center for kids to ride outdoor toys, especially during the colder, winter days. She calls it the “Running Room”, and encourages little ones to get their sillies out by running, riding toys and engaging with others.

Funding & Membership Fees

The Family Playcenter recently had a re-launch called “Say Yah to Play” to raise awareness about its amenities and need for donations. Since the center is a nonprofit, it relies soley on donations and membership dues to stay afloat. There are several ways to join.

  • An annual family membership for unlimited vists costs $120 for Mequon-Thiensville residents and $150 for non-residents. You can pay upfront or opt for monthly auomatic payments to your credit card.
  • Alternatively, you can “Pay As You Play” on a daily basis. Cost is $4 per child per visit for Mequon-Thiensville residents and $6 per child per visit for non-residents. Babies up to 6 months are free. There’s an easy iPad check-in system that makes paying by credit card stress-free.

Regardless of the payment option you choose, the price to play is lower than other comparable playcenters located in the North Shore area.

If you have not had the opportunity to visit this Mequon gem, do so now. Your children will love the fun activities and you’ll love the break, especially on those snowy February winter days.

Splash Into Summer Fun at the JCC

May 29, 2013 By Elizabeth Braatz Leave a Comment

Girl in swimming pool holding on to edge with tennis ballThere are many options for swimming during the summer in Mequon. Whether you’re a member at one of the country clubs or frequent the Mequon Community Pool, you have plenty of choices for splashing around. However, do you want somewhere exceptional to swim with your kids?

Look no further than the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Water Park hidden behind the Sarah Chudnow Center, just off Mequon Road. This luxury pool is available to JCC members only, but you may find the water park to be so great, that a membership is in your future. In fact, a JCC membership gives you access to first-class fitness classes (spinning, yoga, personal training to name a few), fantastic youth sports programs, adult events and, of course, an awesome water park.

The Hy & Richard Smith JCC Water Park opens the beginning of each June and closes just after Labor Day. And there’s something for every water-loving member in your family.

  • A safe, zero-entry splash pad for the little ones, where they can experience the water without the intimidation of the older kids
  • An activity island with slides and spurting water fountains to cool you off
  • Water basketball hoops, water walk lily pads and a climbing wall
  • Plenty of space for lane and open swim. There’s special time dedicated to adult lap swim too.

Other Amenities

If swimming is not on your agenda for the day, try out the full-sized basketball court, sand volleyball court, tetherball, ga-ga pit. Or just relax in the sun under an umbrella.

One of the kid highlights, of course, is the full-service snack shop which offers pizza, pretzels, hummus, veggies & dip and New York-style kosher hot dogs — (somewhat) healthy, yummy and convenient. The JCC also hosts swim events for tots, corn roasts, face painting, basketball tournaments, ice cream socials, dodge ball and so many more fun things.

Summer Birthday?

Sometimes it’s hard to find a destination that is perfect for a summer party for your kids. The JCC Water Park is a great place to have a birthday bash for any water-loving kid. Their 2 hour party packages vary in price (from $180 up) and usually include your own private party room, an ice cream cake with candles, paper goods and soft drinks for up to 12 children. Plus, the bonus is the fun-loving staff who run the birthday activities for the kids.
